Paphos Sights by Car
Kato Paphos Archaeological Park and the Tombs of the Kings are an easy run down the coastal road from Coral Bay. Sorting your Paphos Airport car hire on arrival gives you the freedom to explore these UNESCO World Heritage sites at your own pace, without waiting for the local bus.
Parking is straightforward at the main sites, with large designated areas close to the entrances. Arriving early morning or late afternoon helps you dodge both the midday heat and the tour-bus crowds.
| Site | Entry fee | Parking | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paphos Archaeological Park | €4.50 | Large free car park by the harbour, ~200 m away | Summer 08:30–19:30, winter 08:30–17:00 |
| Tombs of the Kings | €2.50 | Free car park at the entrance | Summer 08:30–19:30, winter 08:30–17:00 |
| Paphos Harbour & Castle | €2.50 (castle) | Metered harbour parking ~€0.20/hour, free Sundays | Summer 08:30–19:30, winter 08:30–17:00 |
If you plan an extensive history tour, a combined antiquities pass costs around €8.50 for a single day or €17 for three days.
The Coast: Sea Caves & Beaches
Driving north from Coral Bay leads to the dramatic Sea Caves coastline and the Edro III shipwreck, which ran aground in 2011 and sits upright just off the rocks. It is a hugely popular sunset spot, with free unpaved roadside parking along Sea Caves Avenue by the restaurants — but the bays fill fast after 17:00, and you should never climb the tilted wreck.
Further north, Agios Georgios has a small fishing harbour, Byzantine basilica ruins and mosaics, and views to Geronisos island, all served by a free car park. The coastal sights are simple to reach, but the wilder northern beaches need careful planning — read our Akamas Peninsula 4x4 guide before you head off-tarmac.
- Coral Bay Beach: Blue Flag, free and paid cliff-top parking, lifeguards April to October, calm shallow water ideal for families.
- Corallia / Laourou Beach: Blue Flag, free parking, calmer water, a five-minute drive south and noticeably quieter.
- Lara Beach: wild turtle-conservation beach with no facilities or lifeguard, reached only on the rough Akamas dirt track.
Polis, Latchi & the Blue Lagoon Boat
A scenic 40-minute drive north from Coral Bay on the E709 climbs through the wine village of Kathikas. Watch for slow farm vehicles and blind bends along this winding rural road.
Your destination is Latchi Marina, where you can park free in Parking Place 1 or 2 and board a boat cruise to the clear water of the Blue Lagoon — far easier than the uninsured overland 4x4 track. The quiet village of Pomos lies about 22 km further east, with the Dragon Cave sea arch and easy roadside parking.
Route notice: the nearby Avakas Gorge has been closed since December 2025 for safety reasons, so confirm its status locally before planning a detour. Before you set off, compare car hire deals to find the right vehicle for your Cyprus road trips.
Troodos Mountains & Wine Villages
Rising to 1,952 m at Mount Olympus, the Troodos range lies about 80 km from Coral Bay — roughly 1.5 to 2 hours via the B8 and E912. The drive is full of hairpins, so use engine braking on the descents and take it slowly to keep passengers free of car-sickness.
Headline stops include the grand Kykkos Monastery (free entry, a huge free car park, reached through the Cedar Valley home to the Cyprus mouflon) and the traditional wine village of Omodos. Get across the local rules before driving into the high country with our guide to driving in Cyprus.
| Destination | Distance from Coral Bay | Key feature | Parking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kathikas village | 15 km | Traditional tavernas and wineries | Free village squares |
| Omodos village | 65 km | Timios Stavros Monastery | Free lower car park |
| Kykkos Monastery | 85 km | Byzantine icons, Cedar Valley | Huge free car park |
| Mount Olympus | 80 km | Highest peak at 1,952 m | Roadside and summit parking |
Wine lovers can visit Vouni Panayia Winery in Pano Panagia (founded 1987, indigenous Xynisteri and Maratheftiko) or the organic Tsangarides Winery in Lemona; both have free parking and tastings. Nominate a teetotal designated driver — the Cyprus drink-drive limit is low at 0.5 g/l blood (0.2 g/l for new drivers). In winter (January to March) police restrict the summit roads to 4x4s or snow-chained cars after heavy snowfall.
Family Days: Paphos Zoo & Adonis Baths
For an easy family day out, Paphos Zoo in Peyia is just 15 minutes north of Coral Bay. The route is fully paved and fine for any standard hire car, leading to a large free car park, with adult entry from around €17.50 (book online to confirm current prices).
The road to the Adonis Baths Waterfalls near Koili is a very different story — a heavily degraded dirt track where standard 2WD hire cars routinely scrape their undercarriage and GPS apps misdirect drivers. Entry to the baths costs €15 for adults and €10 for children.
Adonis Baths advice: ignore Google Maps and follow the brown road signs from Tala, or take an organised buggy or jeep safari. Driving a standard 2WD car down that dirt road risks the same off-road insurance void as the Akamas. To pick a suitable vehicle first, head back to the Coral Bay car hire homepage.
